May Wellman collection [1870?]-[191-?].

This collection contains 239 photographs of the Wellman family, their children and grandchildren and acquaintances. The large album in box 1 contains 22 portraits, 5 of which are identified; it has a worn brown leather cover with embossed flowers; its brass clasp is broken. Box 1 also contains a "Gem Album" of 42 gem tintypes and cartes de visite; it has a worn maroon cloth cover. Two of the tintypes are identified; both are of May Wellman. Box 1 also contains 9 photoprints.

The Wellman brothers Luther, Henry and Sylvanus moved to Boulder from Pennsylvania in July 1859, and began farming. [ Phyllis Smith, A Look at Boulder, p. 20.] Sylvanus was the father of May Wellman, who was also called Mary. The Wellman family established the first wheat farm in Colorado.
